Penhaligon's Portraits – the animal heads and their stories

Among all the luxury bottles on the shelves, few are as recognisable as those of Penhaligon's Portraits: a classic glass bottle crowned with a sculpted animal head, each with its own character. Behind them lies a whole saga about a fictional English aristocratic family, full of intrigue, secrets and eccentrics. If you have been searching for "perfumes with animal heads", here you will find out who the characters are, what their fragrances tell and which of them suits you.

In short
  • Portraits is the collection by the London house Penhaligon's, launched in 2016, in which each fragrance is a character from a family story.
  • The head-shaped caps are not decoration for its own sake – each animal is the character's "portrait".
  • The Tragedy of Lord George (with a stag's head) is the patriarch: brandy, tonka and woods.
  • The fragrances range from fresh and green (Lady Blanche) to dark leather-and-incense (Terrible Teddy) and gourmand (Changing Constance).
  • All Portraits are eaux de parfum and almost all are unisex.

Why the bottles have animal heads

Penhaligon's was founded by William Penhaligon – a barber from Cornwall who became court perfumer in London in the Victorian era. More than a century later, the house, which holds royal warrants, decided to show its more playful, ironic side. So in 2016 Portraits was born: a collection in which each fragrance is a member (or servant) of a fictional noble family living on a country estate – with inheritances, infidelities, revenge and family black sheep.

Instead of painting portraits of the characters, Penhaligon's turns them into animals. The cap of each bottle is a sculpted head – a metaphor for the character: the noble but doomed patriarch is a stag, the cunning and dangerous have the corresponding "snouts". It is very British humour – half hunting trophy from the manor wall, half caricature of the aristocracy. The result is a bottle that sits on the dressing table like an art object and tells a story before you have even sprayed it. You will find the whole brand in the collection Penhaligon's perfumes.

The portrait gallery: the characters one by one

The Tragedy of Lord George – the head of the family

The patriarch, whose head is that of a majestic stag. Lord George is a gentleman with secrets – and his fragrance is classic: brandy, woody notes, tonka and amber. Warm, slightly sweet, with a feeling of leather armchairs and a fireplace. Lord George is perhaps the easiest portrait for a first encounter – especially for men who like classic but not boring fragrances.

The Revenge of Lady Blanche – the wife

If Lord George is fire, Lady Blanche is ice. The name hints at the plot – revenge – and the fragrance is elegantly cool: hyacinth, narcissus, iris and angelica, ginger flower and sandalwood. Green and powdery, aristocratic, a little aloof – beautiful in the way something dangerous is beautiful. Lady Blanche is for connoisseurs of refined florals.

The World According to Arthur

Arthur is the traveller of the family, the man with "his own view of the world". The fragrance combines grapefruit and clary sage with ambrette, incense, vanilla and tonka – warm, welcoming and lightly smoky.

Terrible Teddy – the black sheep

Every family has its rebel. Terrible Teddy is incense, pink pepper and pimento over leather, cedar, vetiver and patchouli, with ambroxan for a modern radiance. Dry, woody-leathery, daring.

Changing Constance

The heroine who cannot be predicted. Her fragrance is the most gourmand in the collection: cardamom and pimento, caramel and a pinch of salt, vanilla, cashmeran and tobacco. Salted caramel for grown-ups – cosy but not childish.

Fortuitous Finley

The lucky one. Cardamom, star anise and black pepper meet pistachio, matcha tea, salt and violet leaf, while patchouli adds depth. An unusual, green-spicy and "nutty" fragrance for people who like to surprise.

The Bewitching Yasmine

The bewitching one. Cardamom and coffee, sambac jasmine, fir, Tahitian vanilla, oud and incense – a sensual, nocturnal fragrance in which flowers and coffee intertwine with smoke and resins.

The Inimitable William Penhaligon and Mr Thompson

The first is a tribute to the founder – bergamot and jasmine over vetiver, incense, cedar and sandalwood; clean, elegant, woody. Mr Thompson is the family's loyal butler: elemi, lavender, pink and black pepper, iris, geranium, vanilla and sesame – polished, quiet and impeccable, just like him. Mr Thompson is also available Unboxed.

Beyond Portraits: other Penhaligon's fragrances

Penhaligon's isn't just animal heads. The house also has more classic lines:

  • Alula – inspired by the ancient oasis on the Arabian Peninsula: incense, cardamom, black pepper, plum, tobacco, saffron and vanilla. Warm and spicy.
  • Legacy of Petra – dedicated to the rock city of Petra: green tea, dill, bergamot, liquorice, myrrh, olibanum and benzoin. Resinous and meditative.
  • Savoy Steam – an aromatic, "steamy" freshness with eucalyptus, rosemary, mint, rose and tea.
  • Solaris – sunny white flowers: neroli, tiaré, ylang-ylang and jasmine with vanilla and sandalwood.
  • The Cut – a clean barbershop fragrance with mint, basil, sage, cypress, fir and cedar.

You will find the brand's unisex releases in Penhaligon's unisex perfumes.

Are they worth it? An honest assessment

Penhaligon's Portraits rank among luxury perfumes and their price reflects not only the contents but also the sculpted bottle. If you are wondering whether they are worth it, here is our honest view:

  • Quality – the compositions are well balanced and wearable; they are not experiments for experiment's sake.
  • Longevity – as eaux de parfum they hold up well. The darker ones (Teddy, Yasmine, Constance) last longer and project more than the bright ones such as Lady Blanche.
  • Uniqueness – few fragrances are as recognisable as a concept. If you value stories and the collector's aspect, Portraits are among the most interesting niche perfume brands to collect.
