1 Million or Invictus – which Rabanne hit is right for you

A gold bar or a sports trophy? Rabanne's two most recognisable bottles (Paco Rabanne until 2023) stand side by side on almost every shelf, but they smell of two completely different male images. 1 Million is spicy, leathery and sweet – a perfume for the evening and the cold. Invictus is marine, citrusy and energetic – a perfume for the day and warm weather. Here is a detailed round-by-round comparison, with a clear answer on which of the two to buy and which flanker is the real upgrade in each line.

In short
  • 1 Million (2008): blood mandarin, cinnamon, rose, leather and amber – warm, sweet-spicy, for the evening.
  • Invictus (2013): grapefruit, marine notes, bay leaf and ambergris – fresh, sporty, for the day.
  • For autumn and winter – 1 Million; for spring and summer – Invictus.
  • The best upgrades: 1 Million Elixir Intense for richer sweetness and Invictus Victory Elixir for a darker, incense-and-vanilla Invictus.

Gold vs trophy: how they came about

When 1 Million came out in 2008, the men's perfume market was dominated by restrained, "clean" fragrances. Created by three perfumers – Christophe Raynaud, Olivier Pescheux and Michel Girard – 1 Million did the opposite: sweet, spicy and unashamedly showy, in a bottle shaped like a gold bar. The idea was simple – success, luxury, nightlife – and it worked. The fragrance became one of the most recognisable men's names of the decade.

Five years later, in 2013, Rabanne launched Invictus – a trophy inspired by sport and victory. Behind it stood a whole team of star perfumers: Anne Flipo, Dominique Ropion, Olivier Polge and Véronique Nyberg. The goal was the opposite of 1 Million: a fresh, energetic, "athletic" fragrance for the day. The two perfumes became the two faces of the brand – and today each is surrounded by a whole family of versions in the collections Rabanne 1 Million and Rabanne Invictus.

Anatomy of the two fragrances

1 Million EDT – spicy sweetness and leather

Rabanne 1 Million EDT opens with blood mandarin, grapefruit and mint – a sparkling, almost fizzy start. Very soon, however, cinnamon appears, which together with rose and spicy notes creates that characteristic "spiced pastry" effect. The base – leather, amber, woody notes and patchouli – is warm and slightly honeyed. The overall impression is of something glossy, self-assured and very sensual.

Longevity is high, usually 7–9 hours, and for the first 2–3 hours the fragrance can be smelled at a distance. This is a perfume with a "voice" – not for the timid.

Invictus EDT – sea, grapefruit and ambergris

Rabanne Invictus EDT starts with bright grapefruit, mandarin and marine notes – a freshness that smells of a sports changing room in the best sense of the word: clean skin, a shower, energy. In the heart, bay leaf and jasmine (hedione) bring airiness, while the base of guaiac wood, patchouli, oakmoss and ambergris adds a light, salty-sweet warmth.

Invictus is lighter than 1 Million but far from weak – it lasts around 6–8 hours and has good projection, especially in warm weather. Its sweetness is delicate, so it is much easier to wear at the office or outdoors.

Round by round: comparison table

Round 1 Million EDT Invictus EDT Winner
Character Spicy-leathery, sweet Marine-citrus, fresh A draw – a matter of taste
Longevity 7–9 h 6–8 h 1 Million
Projection Strong Medium to strong 1 Million
Versatility Mainly evening Day, sport, office Invictus
Summer Heavy in the heat Excellent Invictus
Winter Excellent Too "cold" 1 Million
Risk of "overdoing it" High Low Invictus
Both fragrances are so popular that you will often smell them on other people. If you want to sound more individual, look at the newer versions in section 5 – they are less widespread and more refined.

Calendar: when to wear which

  • December – February: 1 Million. Cinnamon and leather literally "come alive" in the cold.
  • March – May: both work. Invictus for the day, 1 Million for an evening out.
  • June – August: Invictus without hesitation. 1 Million only for late evenings, with a single spray.
  • September – November: a gradual return to 1 Million, especially once temperatures drop below 15 degrees.
Wearing Invictus in winter? Apply it to your scarf or collar – the freshness lasts longer there and doesn't "vanish" in the cold air. With 1 Million in summer it is the other way round: one spray behind the neck is enough.

The best upgrade in each line

For 1 Million fans

1 Million Elixir Intense is the most logical step up. Here the sweetness is nobler and fruitier: apple, davana and Damask rose in the opening, osmanthus in the heart and vanilla absolute, tonka and patchouli in the base. It sounds more mature and velvety than the original, with excellent longevity – ideal for winter evenings.

1 Million Royal goes in a more aromatic direction – cardamom, lavender, sage and benzoin – and suits men who like the line's DNA but want less sugar. 1 Million Parfum is a richer, leathery-amber interpretation for those who want "1 Million, but darker".

For Invictus fans

Invictus Victory Elixir is perhaps the most praised flanker in the line. The marine freshness almost disappears and in its place come lavender, cardamom and black pepper over incense, patchouli, vanilla bean and tonka. The result is a dark, sweet-resinous and very long-lasting fragrance – an Invictus that can easily be worn in winter and in the evening.

Invictus Parfum stays closer to the original, but with a more aromatic, lavender and musky character and a cleaner finish – a good choice if you like the freshness of Invictus but want a smoother, more "grown-up" sound.

Who should buy 1 Million and who Invictus

Buy 1 Million if: you love sweet and spicy fragrances; you go out in the evenings; you live in a cooler climate or are looking for a winter perfume; you want your fragrance to be noticed and to linger after you.

Buy Invictus if: you are looking for a first, easy-to-wear men's perfume; you do sport, travel or spend a lot of time outdoors; you want something for the office and for summer; you don't like heavy, sweet fragrances.

Buy both if: you want a minimal but complete "wardrobe" – Invictus for daytime and warm weather, 1 Million for the night and the cold. The two complement each other perfectly and cover practically the whole year. All of the brand's versions are gathered in the collection Rabanne men's perfumes.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for a young man – 1 Million or Invictus?

For most young men Invictus is the easier start – it is fresh, widely liked and won't irritate anyone in class or at work. 1 Million is an excellent second perfume for evenings out.

Which Paco Rabanne men's perfume lasts the longest?

Of the classic versions, 1 Million EDT lasts longer than Invictus EDT. Among the flankers, the longest-lasting are the more concentrated versions such as 1 Million Elixir Intense and Invictus Victory Elixir.

Is 1 Million suitable for summer?

In the heat it can become heavy and too sweet. If you do wear it in summer, limit yourself to one or two sprays and save it for the evenings.

Are Paco Rabanne and Rabanne the same brand?

Yes. In 2023 the brand shortened its name to Rabanne. The fragrances are the same; only the name on the packaging has changed.
