YSL Libre – all versions: EDP, Intense, Le Parfum and Berry Crush

Lavender was long considered a "masculine" note – it sits at the heart of classic fougères and barbershop colognes. Yves Saint Laurent took it and placed it at the centre of a women's fragrance, pitting it against the most feminine flower in perfumery – orange blossom. That is how Libre was born, one of the most successful women's perfumes of recent years. Today the fragrance has a whole family of versions, and each of them shifts the balance in a different direction. Here is how to find your way.

In short
  • Libre's signature is the contrast between cool lavender and warm, sensual orange blossom over vanilla.
  • Intense and Le Parfum make it warmer – with more vanilla, tonka, honey and spice.
  • Berry Crush adds raspberry and coconut; Flowers & Flames Florale is sunnier and more floral.
  • L'Eau Nue de Peau is the most intimate version – soft, "like a second skin".
  • Absolu Platine is the most intense and radiant interpretation – for women who want maximum presence.

The Libre signature: lavender versus orange blossom

YSL Libre was released in 2019 and created by two great perfumers – Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaïm. The brand's manifesto is freedom, and the olfactory idea is the tension between two opposites. On one side is French lavender – clean, aromatic, a little strict. On the other, Moroccan orange blossom – sensual, honeyed-floral and warm. Underneath, the two are bound together by vanilla, musk and cedar.

It is exactly this contrast that makes Libre recognisable. It is neither purely fresh nor purely sweet; it feels elegant and bold at the same time. Every flanker is essentially an experiment with the balance – more warmth, more fruit, more skin or more sparkle. The bottle stays true to the idea as well: the asymmetrically placed gold Cassandre logo is like a brooch on a jacket. All versions are gathered in the collection Yves Saint Laurent Libre.

YSL Libre EDP – the starting point

The Eau de Parfum is the best way to understand the family. It opens with mandarin, lavender, blackcurrant and petitgrain – fresh, aromatic and slightly fruity. In the heart, lavender meets orange blossom and jasmine, and the base is creamy vanilla with musk, cedar and amber.

On the skin Libre EDP is confident and structured – sweet enough to be pleasant, but the lavender keeps it from turning candy-like. Projection is good and longevity steady for the whole day. It can be worn all year round and is at its best in autumn and spring. If you want to try it at a better price, we also have an Unboxed version.

The warmer versions: Libre Intense and Libre Le Parfum

Libre Intense – vanilla and orchid

Libre Intense (2020) takes the classic signature and immerses it in warmth. The lavender and orange blossom are still there, but orchid joins them and the base is thicker – with vanilla, tonka and amber. The fragrance is creamier, more sensual and more of an evening scent. If the original is a white shirt, Intense is a velvet dress. It is ideal for the cold months and for women who like vanilla fragrances.

Libre Le Parfum – the honeyed version

Le Parfum (2022) goes even further, but in a different direction. Here there is ginger and saffron at the start, while the orange blossom and lavender are wrapped in honey and vanilla. The result is a golden, spicy and very warm fragrance, almost oriental. It is best suited to evenings, winter and women who want a Libre with more character and less freshness.

How to choose between the two: if you love vanilla and softness – Intense; if you like honey, spice and a more "expensive", darker fragrance – Le Parfum. Both are considerably warmer than the EDP, so they are not our first choice for a hot summer.

Fruitier and sunnier: Berry Crush and Flowers & Flames

Libre Berry Crush

Berry Crush is the most playful version of Libre. Raspberry and mandarin open the fragrance with juicy red fruit, the heart keeps the orange blossom and lavender, and a base of vanilla, musk and coconut makes it soft and slightly indulgent. This is the Libre for younger women, for daytime outings and for anyone who finds the original too serious.

Libre Flowers & Flames Florale

Flowers & Flames takes Libre into the sun. Lavender and bergamot are combined with orange blossom and a creamy coconut accord reminiscent of warm skin in summer, while vanilla remains as a soft backdrop. The fragrance is more floral, brighter and more holiday-like – a good alternative for spring and summer, when Intense is too heavy.

The extremes: L'Eau Nue de Peau and Absolu Platine

Libre L'Eau Nue de Peau – a fragrance like skin

The name literally means "naked skin", and it describes the idea very precisely. Mandarin, bergamot, orange blossom and lavender are presented transparently over a soft musky background that blends with the skin's natural scent. This is Libre for closeness – noticed by the person next to you, not from across the room. It is lovely for the office, for women who don't like strong perfumes and for layering with other versions.

Libre Absolu Platine – maximum sparkle

At the other pole is Absolu Platine – the most intense and most expensive member of the family. Aldehydes add a cool, almost metallic sparkle to the bergamot, mandarin and lavender, while orange blossom, vanilla and amber provide a rich, long-lasting base. The fragrance is radiant, dense and very confident – for special evenings and for women who want their perfume to be remembered.

Which version of Libre is for you

Instead of guessing from the descriptions, think about yourself and when you will wear the fragrance:

  • You want one perfume for everything: Libre EDP – the most versatile.
  • You love vanilla and softness: Libre Intense.
  • You prefer dark, "expensive" fragrances with honey and spice: Libre Le Parfum.
  • You like fruity, cheerful fragrances: Berry Crush.
  • You are looking for a summer Libre: Flowers & Flames Florale.
  • You don't like strong perfumes or you work in a small office: L'Eau Nue de Peau.
  • You want a gift with a "wow" effect: Absolu Platine.
Libre layers beautifully with itself. L'Eau Nue de Peau under the EDP or Intense adds softness and extends the fragrance without making it louder.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between YSL Libre EDP and Libre Intense?

The EDP is balanced – the lavender and orange blossom are clear and the vanilla stays in the background. Intense is warmer and creamier, with orchid, more vanilla, tonka and amber, and is better suited to evenings and cold weather.

What does Libre Le Parfum smell like?

Le Parfum is the honeyed-spicy take on Libre – ginger and saffron at the start, orange blossom and lavender in the heart, and honey with vanilla in the base. It is the warmest and most oriental of the classic versions.

Is Libre Berry Crush sweet?

Yes, but not excessively. Raspberry and coconut give it a fruity, indulgent sweetness, while lavender and orange blossom keep the link to the original and stop it from becoming childish.

How long does Libre perfume last?

Libre EDP usually lasts through the whole working day, and Intense, Le Parfum and Absolu Platine even longer. L'Eau Nue de Peau is designed to stay close to the skin and feels more delicate.
