Honey is perhaps the most ancient sweet scent known to humankind – and one of the hardest to turn into a perfume. In small doses it is sunny, golden and cosy. In larger ones it becomes dense, waxy, even slightly animalic. It is precisely this duality that makes honey perfumes so addictive. In this article you will find out how perfumers recreate the scent of honey, what its three faces are and which honey perfumes deserve attention – from the bestseller Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal to the niche legend Xerjoff Naxos.
- Honey in perfumery is an accord: phenylacetic acid and its esters, beeswax absolute and floral notes.
- Three faces: floral (bright, with orange blossom), animalic (dark, leathery) and waxy (tobacco-like, hay-like).
- The best-known honey fragrances: JPG Scandal for women, Xerjoff Naxos unisex, Le Male Elixir for men.
- Honey loves cold weather and skin – applied to the body, it becomes softer and more sensual.
How a honey scent is "made"
Surprisingly, honey is hardly ever used directly in perfumery – it cannot be distilled and does not yield a stable extract. Instead, perfumers build a honey accord. Its basis is phenylacetic acid – a molecule with a distinct honey-sweet scent that at higher concentrations also takes on a warm, animalic, almost urine-like tint. Its esters (methyl and ethyl phenylacetate) are added to it, giving a lighter, fruity sweetness.
The second key material is beeswax absolute. It is obtained from honeycombs and smells of honey, hay, tobacco and slightly of candle. It is the wax that gives honey perfumes their density and "golden" texture. Finally, flowers are added – orange blossom, linden, mimosa – which naturally contain honeyed nuances and make the accord more ethereal.
Floral, animalic, waxy: the three faces of honey
Floral honey
Bright, sunny, with orange blossom, jasmine and gardenia. This is the easiest style to wear – sweet but cheerful. A classic example is Jean Paul Gaultier's Scandal, where honey sits in the heart together with gardenia and orange blossom.
Animalic honey
Dark, thick and slightly "dirty" – here phenylacetic acid is at a higher dose and the honey begins to recall leather, skin and hay. The most famous example in history is Serge Lutens's Miel de Bois, which still divides audiences today. In a more accessible form, this style appears in honey and oud combinations such as Montale Honey Aoud.
Waxy honey
Dry, hay-like, with tobacco and spices. Waxy honey is warm and cosy rather than sweet – it smells of an apiary and an old wooden box. This is the style of Xerjoff Naxos and many men's honey fragrances.
Scandal, Naxos and other honey stars
Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal
When Jean Paul Gaultier launched Scandal in 2017, the bottle with its cap shaped like a woman's legs instantly caught attention. But it is the fragrance that keeps it at the top. Behind it are Daphné Bugey, Christophe Raynaud and Fabrice Pellegrin. It opens with blood orange and mandarin, the heart is honey, gardenia, orange blossom and jasmine, and the base combines beeswax, caramel and patchouli. It is the most popular honey perfume for women of recent years – sweet, sexy and with excellent longevity. If you are searching for "Scandal perfume", this is the original.
Xerjoff Naxos
Naxos (2015) is honey in its noblest form. Lavender and citrus in the opening bring freshness, honey and cinnamon are in the heart, and tobacco, tonka and vanilla in the base. The result is golden, sweet-aromatic and very elegant, worn equally well by men and women. It is no coincidence that Naxos is often named one of the best niche honey fragrances of all. Also explore the other Xerjoff fragrances.
BORNTOSTANDOUT Mad Honey
The name borrows from "mad honey" – a rare honey from rhododendron flowers in the Black Sea region, known for its intoxicating effect. The fragrance combines honey with rum, vanilla and patchouli – warm, thick and a little rebellious.
Montale Honey Aoud
An oriental reading in which honey meets oud, with warmth from vanilla and amber. This is the darkest and most animalic fragrance in our selection. It is also available as Montale Honey Aoud unboxed – the same original bottle at a better price. You will find more of the brand's fragrances among Montale perfumes.
More sweet honey perfumes: a comparison
If you are looking for a sweet perfumein which honey is important but not the only character, here are four popular choices:
| Perfume | Role of honey | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Elixir | combined with tobacco, tonka and benzoin | sweet, dense, masculine | evenings and cold weather |
| Tom Ford Velvet Orchid | with rum and orchid at the start | velvety-floral, luxurious | formal occasions |
| Paco Rabanne Lady Million | in the base, with patchouli | sparkling, floral, self-assured | nights out and parties |
| Montale Lucky Candy | a honeyed note in a candy composition | playful, sugary | lovers of gourmand fragrances |
Le Male Elixir (2023) is the most interesting men's example: the lavender and mint of the Le Male DNA meet honey and tobacco here, making the fragrance much warmer and more sensual than the original. Velvet Orchid (2014), in turn, proves that honey can be refined – it wraps the black orchid and rose in a velvety, almost liqueur-like softness.
How to wear honey fragrances
- Test on your skin, not on a blotter. The honey accord reacts to body heat and chemistry – on some people it sounds more floral, on others more animalic.
- Start with one or two sprays. Honey is a powerful note and easily dominates.
- Choose the season. Floral honeys (Scandal, Lady Million) also work in spring; waxy and animalic ones (Naxos, Honey Aoud) are for autumn and winter.
- Combine wisely. Honey fragrances go beautifully with wool, velvet and leather – materials that are "warm" in themselves.
Conversely, if you want honey to sound creamier and cosier, look for it in the company of vanilla and tonka – that is how the base of Naxos and Le Male Elixir is built. Vanilla softens the waxy edge of honey and extends its sweet trail on the skin. If this pairing appeals to you, also explore our vanilla perfumes – many of them have honeyed nuances that are not always listed in the pyramid.
