The round bottle or the rectangular one? Almost every woman dreaming of her first Chanel arrives at the same question: Chance or Coco Mademoiselle. Both are among the best-selling women's perfumes in the world, both are the work of the Polge family and both have patchouli in their base – yet they create two completely different women. One is spontaneous, bright and unpredictable; the other is elegant, confident and a little mysterious. In this article we compare them in detail – together with their "sisters" – so you can choose your Chanel without a doubt.
- Chance EDP – pink pepper, jasmine, iris, patchouli, musk and vanilla: a playful, sparkling floral chypre with a modern spirit.
- Coco Mademoiselle – orange, bergamot, rose, jasmine, lychee, patchouli and vetiver: a refined oriental chypre with more depth.
- Chance "rejuvenates" and is easier for every day; Coco Mademoiselle sounds more mature and shines in the evening.
- Lighter variants: Chance Eau Tendre (soft, fruity) and Eau Fraîche (citrus-fresh); Coco Mademoiselle L'Eau Privée (soft, intimate).
- If neither appeals – try Gabrielle, Chanel's white floral face.
Two women from the same house
Coco Mademoiselle appeared in 2001. Created by Jacques Polge, Chanel's long-standing perfumer, it is a modern reinterpretation of the legendary Coco from 1984 – brighter, fresher and aimed at a younger generation. Instead of the heavy spices of the original came orange, rose and plenty of patchouli, cleaned up and "lit from within". The result became one of the most recognisable women's fragrances of the 21st century.
Chance followed a year later, in 2002, again by Jacques Polge, and in 2005 came the EDP version, which is the most popular today. The round bottle is no accident: Chance is for the woman who believes in luck and doesn't like to plan everything. The fragrance is more playful and spontaneous, with a characteristic "leap" between pepper, flowers and patchouli.
Interestingly, the two fragrances share a common base – patchouli, musk and vanilla – but use it differently. In Chance it is light and sparkling; in Coco Mademoiselle denser, darker and more sensual. You will find all available versions in the collection Chanel women's perfumes.
Chanel Chance and its family
Chance EDP – the original
Chanel Chance EDP opens with pink pepper, which brings a light spiciness and a feeling of sparks. The heart is jasmine with powdery iris, and the base – patchouli, white musk and vanilla – makes the fragrance warm and memorable without weighing it down. Chance is a floral chypre, but in a modern, clean reading – far from the dusty chypres of the past. Longevity is very good, around 7–8 hours, with moderate sillage.
Chance Eau Tendre – the gentlest
Chance Eau Tendre EDP is the version most loved by younger women. Quince and grapefruit in the opening, rose and jasmine in the heart and white musk in the base – a soft, fruity, "pink" fragrance that stays close to the skin. It suits the office, the warm months and women who find the original Chance too spicy.
Chance Eau Fraîche – the fresh one
Eau Fraîche is the greenest and most citrusy member of the family – citron, jasmine and a woody-amber background. The EDP version is rounder and longer-lasting than the EDT while keeping its sparkling, clean character. The ideal summer Chanel for women who don't like sweetness. There is also Chance Eau Vive – with blood orange and grapefruit, the most energetic and "juicy" in the line.
The whole family is gathered in the collection Chanel Chance.
Coco Mademoiselle – the modern chypre
Chanel Coco Mademoiselle EDT opens with bright orange, bergamot and grapefruit. The citrus, however, is only an overture – soon rose, lychee and Italian jasmine arrive, creating a juicy, slightly fruity floral heart. The base is what makes Coco Mademoiselle so recognisable: patchouli and vetiver, warm and earthy yet clean, as if passed through a filter of light.
Coco Mademoiselle sounds like a woman who knows what she wants. The EDT version is slightly brighter and airier than the classic Eau de Parfum but keeps its character. Longevity is good and the sillage more pronounced than that of Chance.
Coco Mademoiselle L'Eau Privée – the intimate version
Coco Mademoiselle L'Eau Privée (2020, Olivier Polge) was conceived as a fragrance to wear "in private" – even in the evening before bed. Mandarin, rose, jasmine and white musk, without the weight of patchouli. This is the softest, most velvety face of Coco Mademoiselle – wonderful for women who love its DNA but want something quiet and intimate.

Five situations – one choice
- Every day at the office: Chance or Chance Eau Tendre. Bright, pleasant and never overpowering.
- A first date: Coco Mademoiselle. The rose and patchouli leave an impression that is remembered.
- A wedding or formal dinner: Coco Mademoiselle – it has that classic Chanel elegance that suits an evening dress.
- Hot summer and holidays: Chance Eau Fraîche or Eau Vive – freshness without sweetness.
- A gift when you don't know her taste: Chance Eau Tendre is the safest choice – it is liked at almost every age.
The third option: Gabrielle
If neither the pepper of Chance nor the patchouli of Coco Mademoiselle is for you, take a look at Chanel Gabrielle EDP. Created by Olivier Polge in 2017 and named after Coco Chanel's real name, it is a white floral bouquet – jasmine, ylang-ylang, orange blossom and tuberose, lit up by grapefruit and mandarin. Gabrielle is sunny, feminine and very clean, without the chypre bitterness of the other two. A good choice for women who love flowers above all else.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better – Chanel Chance or Coco Mademoiselle?
There is no "better" – only more suitable. Chance is easier for everyday wear and sounds more youthful. Coco Mademoiselle is more expressive, more sensual and better for the evening. If you are looking for one single Chanel for everything, Chance is the more versatile.
Which Chanel Chance is the nicest?
It depends on taste. Chance EDP is the most characterful; Eau Tendre is the gentlest and most popular among younger women; Eau Fraîche is the freshest and ideal for summer.
How long does Coco Mademoiselle last?
On most women the fragrance can be smelled all day, and the patchouli in the base lingers on clothes for a long time. L'Eau Privée is considerably lighter and closer to the skin.
Is Coco Mademoiselle suitable for young women?
Yes. Although it sounds more sophisticated than Chance, it is not a "fragrance for older ladies". For younger women it is especially good for evening occasions.
