YSL Libre or Good Girl – which modern women's hit to choose

Walk into any perfumery today and two bottles will almost certainly be in the front row: the gold-and-black YSL Libre with its asymmetric logo and Carolina Herrera's dark blue glass stiletto, Good Girl. Both are modern women's bestsellers, both are floral-orientals with vanilla in the base – and yet they smell like completely different women. In this article we take the two fragrances apart note by note, compare their longevity and day/night character and tell you which of the many versions are worth it – so you can choose with confidence instead of buying blind.

In short
  • YSL Libre is lavender + orange blossom + vanilla: clean, elegant, "free" – more versatile for daytime and the office.
  • Good Girl is tuberose + coffee + cocoa + tonka: darker, more gourmand and sexier – a natural choice for the evening.
  • Both are Eaux de Parfum with good longevity; Good Girl is usually denser and sweeter on the skin.
  • If you like one but want more: Libre Intense and Le Parfum; Very Good Girl and Good Girl Blush.

Two philosophies of modern femininity

Good Girl was released in 2016, and its bottle states the idea straight away: a glass high-heeled shoe inspired by a woman's duality – a "good girl" on the outside, daring on the inside. The perfume is the work of Louise Turner and is one of those fragrances people recognise from across the lift.

YSL Libre arrived three years later, in 2019, created by Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaïm. Its idea is freedom – expressed in a surprising way: with lavender, a note we traditionally associate with men's fougères. Yves Saint Laurent "dresses" it in orange blossom and vanilla, and so a perfume is born that is both strict and soft, like a perfectly tailored jacket over a silk blouse.

In other words: Libre is confidence that doesn't need attention, while Good Girl is confidence that seeks it. Neither is better – the question is which role feels closer to you.

YSL Libre: the lavender that became feminine

YSL Libre EDP opens with mandarin, blackcurrant and aromatic lavender – the first minutes are fresh, slightly herbal and almost "clean". In the heart, orange blossom and jasmine soften the lavender and make it powdery and feminine. The base is creamy vanilla with cedar and ambery nuances, which stays close to the skin for hours without becoming stickily sweet.

It is exactly this balance that explains why "Libre perfume" is searched for so often: it is sweet enough to be cosy and aromatic enough to suit the office, business meetings and everyday life. The lavender keeps the composition upright, so Libre rarely becomes heavy, even on warmer days. If this is your favourite note, browse the perfumes with lavender.

Libre Intense – the warmer sibling

Libre Intense adds orchid and tonka and boosts the vanilla. The lavender is there, but more subdued, and the whole impression is more ambery, more velvety and better suited to autumn, winter and evenings. Many consider it the longer-lasting version of the family.

Libre Le Parfum – with honey and saffron

Le Parfum introduces ginger, saffron and honey. It is the most golden and most "luxurious" interpretation – warm, slightly spicy, with a honeyed sweetness that feels like a cashmere scarf. A good choice if the original feels too cool to you.

The whole line – including the newer floral and fruity versions – is gathered in the collection YSL Libre.

Good Girl: the stiletto perfume

When someone searches for "the stiletto perfume", they almost always mean Carolina Herrera Good Girl EDP. The fragrance opens with almond, coffee, bergamot and lemon – from the very first minute you feel warmth and a slightly bitter roasted note. In the heart tuberose, jasmine sambac, orange blossom and orris root bloom: the white floral part is rich and sensual. The base is tonka, cocoa, vanilla and woody notes – a dark, gourmand sweetness that lasts a long time and leaves a noticeable trail.

It is the tuberose that is key. It is an intoxicating flower and makes Good Girl far more of an evening scent than Libre. If you love this note, also see the perfumes with tuberose. On the skin Good Girl is thicker and sweeter, so "less is more" applies: two sprays are usually quite enough.

Very Good Girl – the red stiletto

Very Good Girl replaces the dark cocoa tones with lychee, redcurrant, rose and vanilla, balanced with vetiver. The result is fruitier, more playful and brighter – Good Girl for people who find the original too heavy.

Good Girl Blush – the powdery version

Blush is the gentlest member of the family: bergamot and bitter almond, peony and ylang-ylang, vanilla and coumarin. Soft, powdery and "pink", suitable for daytime and for people looking for comfort rather than drama.

You will find all available versions in the collection Carolina Herrera Good Girl.

Libre vs Good Girl in a table

Criterion YSL Libre EDP Good Girl EDP
Year / perfumer 2019, Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaïm 2016, Louise Turner
Key notes Lavender, mandarin, orange blossom, jasmine, vanilla, cedar Almond, coffee, tuberose, jasmine sambac, cocoa, tonka
Character Clean, aromatic-floral, elegant Dark, gourmand-floral, seductive
Sweetness Medium High
Projection Moderate to strong in the first hours Strong, a noticeable trail
Best time Daytime, office, all seasons Evening, autumn and winter
Age feel Ageless, slightly more mature and refined Youthful and daring, but wearable at any age

In terms of longevity, both are serious Eaux de Parfum: on most people they last a whole working day, and on clothes until the next morning. Good Girl is usually a little denser and louder, while Libre lingers as a vanilla-lavender veil close to the skin. The real result depends on your skin – dry skin "eats" perfume faster, so an unscented moisturising lotion helps both.

Expert tip: don't test the two fragrances on the same wrist. Spray Libre on one arm and Good Girl on the other and smell them after 2–3 hours. That is when the heart and base tell the truth – the first minutes are often misleading.

Frequently asked questions

Which is sweeter – YSL Libre or Good Girl?

Good Girl is noticeably sweeter because of the cocoa, tonka and praline-like feel. Libre also has vanilla, but the lavender and citrus keep it fresher and more restrained.

What is the difference between YSL Libre EDP and Libre Intense?

Libre Intense adds orchid and tonka and has more vanilla – it is warmer, more ambery and more of an evening scent. The original Libre EDP is brighter and more aromatic thanks to its more pronounced lavender.

Is Good Girl suitable for the office?

It can be, if applied sparingly – one or two sprays. Still, for enclosed spaces and hot days, Libre or Good Girl Blush is a more delicate choice.

Which lasts longer?

Both are Eaux de Parfum with good to very good longevity. Good Girl is usually felt more strongly and for longer around you, while Libre stays closer to the skin but also lasts for many hours.
