Perfume has no gender – only notes. The division into "men's" and "women's" fragrances is relatively recent and is more a marketing decision than an objective fact. Today the most talked-about niche perfumes are almost without exception unisex, and more and more couples share a single bottle. In this article we explain where the division comes from and why niche houses ignore it, and we suggest ten perfumes for men and women that smell equally good on both.
- Until the early 20th century perfumery did not strictly divide fragrances by gender – citrus, rose and vetiver were worn by everyone.
- Unisex does not mean "neutral": Baccarat Rouge 540, Angels' Share and Ombre Leather all have strong character.
- The same fragrance smells different on different skin – which is why a shared bottle is rarely boring.
- For couples, citrus-green, amber and gourmand fragrances work best.
Why perfume has no gender
If you go back to the 19th century, you will find that citrus-based colognes, lavender and rose water were shared by men and women. The clear division came later, in the 20th century, when the big fashion houses began selling fragrance as part of an image – a bottle for the "strong man" and a bottle for the "feminine woman". Fresh, woody and leathery notes were thus declared masculine, while flowers, vanilla and powder were declared feminine.
The nose, however, knows no such rules. Rose is a key ingredient in many classic men's fragrances, vetiver and patchouli appear in a number of iconic women's perfumes, and vanilla has long been a star of men's oriental compositions too. What really determines how a fragrance smells is skin chemistry, climate and the way you wear it – not the label on the box.
How niche perfumery made unisex the norm
Niche houses build their identity around raw materials and ideas, not around an advertising campaign with a particular model. That is why Byredo, Montale, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Xerjoff and Tiziana Terenzi offer most of their ranges without a gender split. For them, whether a fragrance is "woody", "amber" or "gourmand" matters more than who it is meant for.
Mainstream brands are following the same path. Calvin Klein launched CK One back in 1994 with the open message that the fragrance was for everyone – and it became the symbol of a whole generation. Today unisex is also the fastest-growing segment among Arabic houses such as Lattafa. If you are looking for a wide choice, start with the collection of unisex perfumes or with niche fragrances, where almost everything can be worn by both.
10 perfumes for men and women that are worth it
1. Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540
Saffron, jasmine, amberwood and ambergris – an airy, slightly sugary and mineral composition that creates a distinctive halo around you. Released in 2015, it is today perhaps the most recognisable unisex fragrance in the world. On a man's skin it often smells woodier, on a woman's sweeter.
2. Xerjoff Erba Pura
Juicy citrus and fruit on a soft base of white musk, amber and vanilla. The fragrance is sunny, sweet-fruity and projects strongly – a typical "compliment magnet" that works on both partners.
3. Calvin Klein CK One
The 1994 classic: lemon, bergamot, pineapple and green notes, with tea and musk in the heart. Clean, light and unobtrusive – an ideal summer or office fragrance for two on a minimal budget.
4. Byredo Gypsy Water Absolu
An intensified version of the famous Gypsy Water: pine needles, black pepper, bergamot, incense, iris and vanilla. The fragrance carries the atmosphere of a forest and a campfire but stays soft and skin-like. A perfect example of why the question "is Byredo for men or women" actually makes no sense.
5. Tiziana Terenzi Kirke
Passion fruit, peach, raspberry and blackcurrant on a musky base. Kirke is fruity but not childish – it has the density and longevity typical of the Italian house's extraits. Men who love fruity fragrances wear it with pleasure.
6. Hermès Un Jardin sur le Nil
Created by Jean-Claude Ellena in 2005, inspired by the gardens around Aswan. Green mango, lotus, grapefruit and reed – a fresh, slightly watery and intelligent fragrance that does not seem to belong to any particular gender. Excellent for the hot months.
7. Montale Chocolate Greedy
Cocoa, coffee, candied bitter orange, vanilla and tonka. A gourmand fragrance with a rich chocolate character that often becomes drier and more coffee-like on a man's skin. Montale, by the way, offers almost its entire range as unisex – see Montale's unisex fragrances.
8. Kilian Angels' Share
Cognac, cinnamon, oak, tonka, praline and vanilla – like a warm cinnamon pastry next to a glass of cognac. Released in 2020, it quickly became one of the most popular winter fragrances for couples.
9. Lattafa Khamrah
Cinnamon, nutmeg, dates, praline and vanilla. It is often compared with Angels' Share – a similar warm, boozy-sweet atmosphere at a considerably more affordable price. A great way to test whether gourmand fragrances are for you.
10. Tom Ford Ombre Leather Parfum
Leather, violet leaves, jasmine and woody notes. Ombre Leather is raw and soft at the same time – a leather jacket worn by him or by her. The Parfum concentration makes it smoother and longer-lasting.
Perfume for him and her: how to choose a shared fragrance
If you are looking for a perfume for him and her that you will both enjoy wearing, go by style rather than by brand name:
| If you both love… | Choose | When |
|---|---|---|
| Freshness and cleanliness | CK One, Un Jardin sur le Nil | Summer, office, everyday |
| Fruit and sweetness | Erba Pura, Kirke | Spring, summer, going out |
| Warm, sweet fragrances | Angels' Share, Khamrah, Chocolate Greedy | Autumn, winter, evenings |
| Something recognisable and luxurious | Baccarat Rouge 540 | All year, special occasions |
| Character and depth | Ombre Leather, Gypsy Water Absolu | Cool weather, evening |
Three practical tips for couples
- Test on both skins. The same fragrance can smell sweeter on one of you and woodier on the other – that is an advantage, not a problem.
- Don't wear the same scent at the same time on important occasions. A shared bottle is wonderful, but on two people in one room the fragrance can easily become too strong.
- Combine. Some couples choose two different fragrances from the same family – for example Angels' Share for him and Khamrah for her – for a harmonious but not identical effect.

Does Byredo make men's or women's perfumes?
Byredo does not divide its fragrances by gender – the range is mostly unisex. The choice depends on whether you prefer woody, floral or powdery notes.
Does Montale offer men's or women's fragrances?
Almost all Montale fragrances are unisex, including the oud compositions and gourmand scents such as Chocolate Greedy. There are a few exceptions explicitly positioned as women's or men's.
Is Initio Paragon for men or women?
Initio Parfums Privés generally presents its fragrances without a gender split. Paragon is woody-aromatic and in practice is worn more often by men, but there is nothing to stop a woman wearing it.
