Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male – Le Parfum, Elixir and the classic

Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male – Le Parfum, Elixir and the classic

Few men's perfumes can be recognised from a distance by their bottle alone. Jean Paul Gaultier's muscular torso in a sailor's striped top is one of them – a bottle that has stood on the shelves of generations of men since 1995. Today, however, the "male body" has a whole family: the classic Le Male, the more elegant Le Parfum, the honey-sweet Elixir and the tropical Le Beau line. If you are wondering which Jean Paul Gaultier men's perfume to choose – for the club, the office or as a gift – here you will find a clear comparison.

In short
  • Le Male EDT – the original: lavender, mint and vanilla. A barbershop classic with a gourmand heart.
  • Le Male Le Parfum – more mature and elegant: cardamom, lavender, iris and vanilla. The best choice for the office and dinner.
  • Le Male Elixir – the sweetest and most powerful: lavender, honey, tonka and tobacco. Made for the night.
  • Le Beau – the summer alternative: coconut, bergamot and tonka in a green bottle.

The story of the torso-shaped bottle

Jean Paul Gaultier has always loved provocation and playing with gender. His first perfume – the women's Classique from 1993 – came in a bottle shaped like a female torso in a corset. Two years later its male counterpart appeared: Le Male, a man's body in blue-and-white stripes inspired by the sailor's uniform that is the designer's trademark. The packaging was unusual too – a metal tin like a can of food.

That is why, when someone looks for a "torso perfume" or a "body-shaped men's perfume", it is almost always Le Male or one of its successors. Over the years the bottle has changed its "clothes" – golden armour, a black uniform, green leaves – but the silhouette remains. The whole family is gathered in the collection Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male & Le Beau.

Le Male EDT – the 1995 original

Le Male was created by Francis Kurkdjian, then only in his twenties – it was his first big success, years before he founded his own house, Maison Francis Kurkdjian. The idea is brilliantly simple: take the old-fashioned scent of the barbershop – lavender, mint, soapy cleanliness – and combine it with something unexpectedly sensual.

The opening is aromatic and fresh: lavender, mint, bergamot and artemisia, with a pinch of cardamom. The heart brings orange blossom and cinnamon, and the base generous vanilla, tonka and warm woody notes. It is precisely the "clean aftershave + sweet vanilla" contrast that makes Le Male so recognisable and so liked by the people around you.

Le Male is an Eau de Toilette, but it is considerably more tenacious than many fresh EDTs. In cold weather it easily lasts the whole working day, and the vanilla stays on clothes until the next morning. If vanilla is your note, also browse the vanilla perfumes.

Le Male Le Parfum – the officer's uniform

Le Male Le Parfum (2020) dresses the torso in a black uniform with gold buttons – and the character is indeed more formal. The fragrance was created by Quentin Bisch and Natalie Gracia-Cetto. Here the freshness of mint almost disappears: cardamom and lavender remain, joined by powdery iris and creamy vanilla over a woody base.

The result feels more mature, softer and more "expensive" than the original. Le Parfum is less sweet than Elixir and less aromatic than the EDT, which makes it the most versatile member of the family – suited to the office, restaurants and men over 30 who want the classic DNA but in a more refined suit.

Le Male Elixir – the night version

Le Male Elixir (2023) is the most intense interpretation yet, again signed by Quentin Bisch. The bottle is golden, and the fragrance is the sweetest in the line. Lavender and mint remain as a link to the original but quickly give way to honey, tonka, benzoin and tobacco. The result is a warm, honey-amber fragrance with an excellent sillage.

Elixir is made for cold nights, clubs and parties – wherever you want to be noticed. Its sweetness, however, calls for moderation: two or three sprays are quite enough, and in the heat or in a closed office it can turn out too cloying. If you like the honey-tobacco profile, also see the other lavender perfumes, where this note is often combined with vanilla.

Le Beau and Paradise Garden – the island

The Le Beau line (2019) takes the torso to a paradise island: the bottle is green, and the male body is "dressed" in leaves. Le Beau EDT is built around bergamot, coconut and tonka – a fresh, sunny, slightly creamy fragrance that sounds like summer without being aquatic or marine in the classic sense.

  • Le Beau Le Parfum – a denser, longer-lasting version in which the tropical notes (pineapple, coconut) are wrapped in iris and a woody base. An excellent summer evening choice.
  • Le Beau Paradise Garden – an even greener, more vegetal interpretation of the "garden" – for men who prefer freshness to sweetness.

If you like the brand's modern men's fragrances, also compare them with the Scandal Pour Homme line, which replaces lavender with caramel and vetiver – the whole range is in Jean Paul Gaultier men's perfumes.

Side-by-side comparison

Fragrance Key notes Sweetness Longevity and sillage Season
Le Male EDT Lavender, mint, vanilla Medium Good, moderate sillage Autumn – spring
Le Male Le Parfum Cardamom, iris, vanilla Medium Very good, soft sillage All year round (except heatwaves)
Le Male Elixir Lavender, honey, tonka, tobacco High Excellent, strong sillage Autumn, winter, night
Le Beau EDT Bergamot, coconut, tonka Low to medium Moderate Spring, summer
Le Beau Le Parfum Pineapple, coconut, iris, woody notes Medium Very good Summer, evening

Longevity depends strongly on skin and climate, so treat the table as a guide rather than a guarantee. The general rule is clear: the darker the bottle, the denser and sweeter the fragrance inside.

Which for the club, which for the office

For clubs and parties

The undisputed winner is Le Male Elixir. The honey and tobacco unfold beautifully in the warmth of the crowd, and the sillage leaves an impression. The classic Le Male EDT is also a nightlife legend – it is no coincidence that for decades it was "the scent of the dance floor".

For the office

This is where Le Male Le Parfum works best – characterful enough to be noticed but soft enough not to bother colleagues. In summer replace it with Le Beau, which is lighter and sunnier.

For a date

If the date is on a winter evening – Elixir in moderation. If it is a summer dinner outdoors – Le Beau Le Parfum.

As a gift

When you do not know the person's taste well, Le Parfum is the safest choice. The original Le Male, meanwhile, is perfect for men who wore it in their youth and will appreciate the nostalgia.

Try "double wearing": Le Beau during the day and a few sprays of Elixir in the evening. The two fragrances share tonka in the base, and the transition is surprisingly harmonious.
