The same perfume can sound refined on one person and overpowering on another – and often the difference lies not in the fragrance but in how it is applied. How do you apply perfume correctly? Where exactly should you spray, how many times, on skin or clothes, and why is rubbing your wrists the most common mistake? Here is a practical guide to help you get the most out of every bottle.
- Spray from 15–20 cm onto clean, hydrated skin – ideally right after a shower.
- The pulse points (neck, behind the ears, inner elbows, wrists) warm the fragrance and help it unfold.
- Don't rub your wrists – you speed up the evaporation of the top notes and blur the first impression.
- The number of sprays depends on the concentration and the occasion: an Eau de Toilette tolerates more, a Parfum less.
- Clothes and hair hold fragrance longer but call for care with the fabric.
How to apply perfume: the basic rule
Perfume is a mixture of aromatic oils dissolved in alcohol. Once the alcohol evaporates, the oils remain on the skin and begin to unfold – first the top notes, then the heart and finally the base. That is why a good base matters most: skin that is clean, dry and lightly moisturised.
The best moment is after a shower, when the pores are open and the skin is warm. If you have dry skin, apply an unscented lotion or cream a few minutes before the perfume – the oils hold better on a hydrated surface than on a dry one. If the lotion is scented, make sure it doesn't clash with the perfume.
Hold the bottle 15–20 centimetres from the skin. That way the spray forms a fine mist covering a larger area, instead of one wet drop that evaporates unevenly.
Where to spray – a map of the pulse points
Pulse points are places where blood vessels run close to the surface and the skin is slightly warmer. The warmth helps the fragrance unfold and rise towards those around you.
| Zone | Effect | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| The sides of the neck and behind the ears | The fragrance is noticed when you move and talk | Evenings, dates, a stronger presence |
| The back of the neck | A soft trail behind you, away from your own nose | People who quickly "get used to" their own fragrance |
| Inner elbows | A discreet, intimate aura | The office, warm weather |
| Wrists | Handy for checking the fragrance during the day | A single spray, no rubbing |
| Décolleté / chest under clothing | Body heat "sends" the fragrance upwards | Cold months, heavy compositions |
| Behind the knees | The fragrance rises during the day | Summer, dresses and shorts |
How many sprays by concentration and occasion
Concentration determines how many aromatic oils the liquid contains. Roughly: an Eau de Cologne (EDC) contains about 2–5%, an Eau de Toilette (EDT) about 5–15%, an Eau de Parfum (EDP) about 15–20% and a Parfum/Extrait 20% and above. Exact values vary by brand, but the logic is clear: the higher the concentration, the fewer sprays you need.
- Eau de Toilette: 3–5 sprays. Example: Bleu de Chanel EDT – fresh, aromatic-woody, with grapefruit, ginger and incense – or the classic Hermès Terre d’Hermès (2006, Jean-Claude Ellena) with orange, pepper, vetiver and cedar.
- Eau de Parfum: 2–4 sprays. YSL Libre EDP with lavender, orange blossom and vanilla, or Armani Stronger With You Intensely with toffee, cinnamon and vanilla.
- Parfum: 1–3 sprays. Acqua di Giò Profondo Parfum is the denser, darker interpretation of the marine Profondo – with mandarin, marine notes, patchouli and labdanum.
By occasion
For the office and enclosed spaces – less, and closer to the body (elbows, chest under clothing). For an evening date or an outdoor event you can add the neck and hair. In hot weather reduce by one or two sprays: the heat boosts projection anyway.
Eau de Toilette – how to use it and what it suits
Many people ask what Eau de Toilette is used for and whether it is a "weaker perfume". In fact, an EDT is a separate interpretation: with more pronounced fresh top notes and a lighter base. That makes it ideal for daytime, sport, the office and the warm months.
Eau de Toilette is used exactly like an Eau de Parfum – on the skin, on the pulse points, from a distance. The difference is that you can refresh it after 4–5 hours without overdoing it. It is handy to carry a small atomiser in your bag. If you like a fragrance but its EDT version seems short-lived, check whether there is an EDP or Parfum in the same line – as with Acqua di Giò, where the choice of concentrations is wide.
Hair perfume and perfume for clothes
Hair perfume
Hair is an excellent carrier of fragrance: it is porous and releases a light trail with every movement. The alcohol in perfume is drying, however, so don't spray directly at the roots and don't overdo it. A better option is to spray once from a distance onto the ends or onto your brush before brushing. Some brands offer dedicated hair mists with less alcohol – they are the gentlest.
Perfume for clothes
Fabrics hold fragrance much longer than skin – sometimes for days. Wool, cotton and scarves are the most rewarding. There are, however, two warnings. First, silk and light, delicate fabrics can be stained by the oils and colourants – test on a hidden spot. Second, on fabric the fragrance doesn't develop as it does on warm skin: the top notes linger longer and the base comes across flatter. So combine: one or two sprays on the skin and one on your scarf or collar.
6 mistakes that spoil a fragrance
- Rubbing your wrists. Rubbing warms the skin and speeds up the evaporation of the most volatile top notes, and the first impression of the fragrance gets blurred. Simply let the perfume dry on its own.
- Spraying into the air and "walking into" the cloud. Most of the perfume ends up on the floor. If you want a light effect, spray once less, directly onto the skin.
- Too close to the skin. A wet patch evaporates unevenly and can irritate.
- Too much. If you can no longer smell the fragrance after 20 minutes, that is olfactory adaptation, not a lack of perfume. Don't add more.
- Spraying onto jewellery. Alcohol and oils can tarnish pearls and some metals. Put your jewellery on once the perfume has dried.
- Mixing with a scented lotion. If the products don't match, you get a chaotic scent. Use an unscented base or a product from the same line.

Frequently asked questions
How many sprays of perfume are normal?
For an Eau de Toilette 3–5, for an Eau de Parfum 2–4, for a Parfum 1–3. At the office and in hot weather, aim for the lower end.
Can I put perfume on my hair?
Yes, but in moderation: once from a distance onto the ends or onto your brush. Alcohol is drying, so don't spray the roots every day.
Why shouldn't you rub your wrists?
Rubbing speeds up the evaporation of the top notes and blurs the opening of the fragrance. Let the perfume dry on its own.
Is it better on skin or on clothes?
On skin the fragrance develops fully; on clothes it lasts longer. The best result is a combination of both, with care for delicate fabrics.
The right application makes every fragrance more beautiful. Choose yours and wear it with confidence.
