Coffee perfumes – fragrances for espresso lovers

Coffee perfumes – fragrances for espresso lovers

For some people the day starts with the first sip of espresso – so it is no surprise they want to wear that scent on their skin too. A coffee perfume, however, is not simply "the smell of a café": in a perfumer's hands coffee can be bitter and smoky, creamy like a latte, or dark and romantic in the company of rose. In this article you will find out how a coffee accord is made, what its main styles are and which are the best coffee fragrances – from designer classics to niche and Arabic perfumes.

In short
  • Coffee in perfumery comes from a CO2 extract or absolute, complemented by molecules with a roasted, nutty nuance.
  • Three main styles: bitter-roasted (espresso), sweet-gourmand (latte, caramel) and coffee with a flower (most often rose or white flowers).
  • Black Opium and Good Girl turned coffee into a hit in women's perfumes, and Montale Intense Café in niche perfumery.
  • Coffee fragrances are strongest in autumn and winter, on evenings out.

How the scent of coffee is made in perfume

Real coffee is a temperamental raw material. A freshly brewed cup contains hundreds of volatile compounds that oxidise quickly – which is why "direct" coffee in a perfume would smell more like cold grounds. Perfumers use concentrated extracts of roasted coffee beans, obtained by CO2 extraction or as an absolute. They carry the bitterness and warmth of the roast, but on their own they are quite dark and heavy.

That is why the extract is almost always "tuned" with other notes. Vanilla, tonka and caramel make it sweet like a latte; patchouli and leather boost the bitterness; citrus and pink pepper add a spark reminiscent of the first sip of espresso. So-called pyrazines also play an important role – molecules with a roasted, nutty smell that occur naturally in roasted coffee and hazelnuts. If you love this dark, bittersweet direction, also browse the chocolate perfumes – the two notes often go hand in hand.

Three styles of coffee fragrance

Bitter-roasted: for espresso lovers

Here the coffee is dark, dry and almost smoky. Its partners are patchouli, leather, incense or woody notes. Such fragrances smell of freshly ground coffee and roasted beans rather than dessert – suitable for people who drink their coffee without sugar.

Sweet-gourmand: latte, mocha and caramel

The most popular style. The coffee is softened with vanilla, milk, caramel or praline and sounds like a cup of latte with foam. These fragrances are cosy, flattering and draw many compliments, but they can become heavy in the heat. If this direction appeals to you, you will also like the vanilla perfumes.

Coffee with a flower: rose, jasmine and orange blossom

An unexpected but very elegant combination. Bitter coffee is complemented by rose or white flowers, and the result is a romantic evening fragrance with depth. This very contrast lies at the heart of some of the most successful coffee perfumes.

Designer perfumes with coffee

1. YSL Black Opium

The fragrance that made coffee fashionable in women's perfumery. Black Opium (2014) combines black coffee with white flowers – orange blossom and jasmine – and warm vanilla, while pink pepper and pear give a juicy opening. Sweet but not childish, with excellent longevity. If you are looking for a single coffee-scented perfume to wear in the evening, this is the safest choice.

2. Carolina Herrera Good Girl

In the shoe bottle (2016, Louise Turner) coffee and almond open the composition, while tuberose and sambac jasmine turn it into a sensual floral fragrance over tonka and cocoa. Here coffee is more of an accent than the lead – an ideal option for those who want just a nuance of espresso.

3. Dolce&Gabbana The Only One

The Only One (2018) is a powdery-gourmand interpretation: violet and coffee, iris and caramel. The fragrance is soft, feminine and slightly retro, like a velvet dress.

4. Valentino Uomo

For men who want coffee in a classic frame. Valentino Uomo (2014) combines bergamot and myrtle with roasted coffee, gianduja-style chocolate and soft leather. Elegant, bittersweet and extremely wearable.

Niche coffee fragrances

5. Montale Intense Café

Perhaps the best-known niche coffee perfume. Intense Café combines roasted coffee with rose, vanilla, amber and white musk. The result is a sweet-floral, creamy fragrance with impressive longevity and sillage – typical of Montale. Its darker version, Intense Café Ristretto, boosts the roasted beans and adds caramel.

6. Mancera Amore Caffè

Amore Caffè is the most "patisserie" fragrance on the list: the coffee is wrapped in vanilla and sweet, dessert-like notes and sounds like a frothy coffee in an Italian pasticceria. Unisex, very cosy, suited to cold days.

7. Tom Ford Café Rose

If you love the dark style, Café Rose (2012) places coffee alongside rich rose, patchouli and incense. Here the coffee is bitter and deep rather than sweet – a fragrance for evenings out and for people who are not afraid of character.

Arabic perfume with coffee

In Arab culture coffee (qahwa) is a ritual of hospitality – often flavoured with cardamom and served with dates. No wonder coffee is a favourite note in Arabic perfumery too, and at very affordable prices.

  • Armaf Odyssey Toffee Coffee – as the name suggests, a sweet tandem of coffee and toffee. A gourmand fragrance for dessert lovers, at a price that lets you wear it every day.
  • Caneza Mezmar Cafe Vanilla – coffee and vanilla, the classic latte formula in a soft, sweet women's version.
  • Lattafa Asad – darker and masculine: black pepper at the start, coffee in the heart and warm vanilla in the base. It is often compared with more expensive spicy-amber men's fragrances.
  • Lattafa Khamrah – not a coffee perfume in the narrow sense: cinnamon, dates and praline lead. But its dark, spicy sweetness sits naturally alongside coffee fragrances and will appeal to anyone who loves coffee with dates.

You will find more ideas in the collection of Arabic perfumes.

Comparison: which coffee perfume for whom

Perfume Coffee style Sweetness Suits
YSL Black Opium Coffee with white flowers High Women, evening
CH Good Girl Coffee as an accent Medium Women, dates
D&G The Only One Powdery-gourmand Medium Women, autumn
Valentino Uomo Coffee and chocolate Medium Men, office and evening
Montale Intense Café Coffee with rose High Unisex, winter
Mancera Amore Caffè Latte/dessert Very high Unisex, cosiness
Tom Ford Café Rose Bitter, with rose Low Unisex, evening
Lattafa Asad Spicy coffee Medium Men, cold weather
Coffee fragrances have a big sillage. For the office one or two sprays on the body rather than the neck are enough – that way the fragrance is felt as you move, without dominating the room. If you wear a sweet coffee fragrance during the day too, choose an Eau de Toilette or a lighter version.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best women's coffee perfume?

The most popular is YSL Black Opium – coffee, white flowers and vanilla. If you prefer coffee only as a nuance, choose Good Girl, and for a more powdery mood – The Only One.

Is there a men's perfume that smells of coffee?

Yes. Valentino Uomo combines coffee with chocolate and leather, and Lattafa Asad combines coffee with black pepper and vanilla. The niche Montale Intense Café and Tom Ford Café Rose are unisex and wear wonderfully on men too.

Is a coffee perfume suitable for summer?

Most coffee fragrances are warm and sweet, so they are best from autumn to spring. In summer wear them in the evening and in smaller amounts.

Why does coffee in perfume not smell exactly like your morning cup?

Fresh coffee contains unstable compounds that disappear quickly. Perfumers recreate the feel with extracts of roasted beans and complementary notes, which is why the fragrance is more stylised and longer-lasting than the real drink.
