Chanel Chance – every version: Eau Tendre, Eau Fraîche, Eau Vive

Chanel Chance – every version: Eau Tendre, Eau Fraîche, Eau Vive

The round Chanel Chance bottle is perhaps the most recognisable bottle in 21st-century women's perfumery – but beneath it hide four quite different characters. The classic original, the greenish Eau Fraîche, the pink Eau Tendre and the orange Eau Vive share the name, the shape and the "chance is in motion" philosophy, yet they smell like four different women. In this comparison we decode each colour – notes, mood, season and age – and explain how the Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum differ in each version. If you are wondering which Chanel Chance is best for you, here you will get the answer.

In short
  • Chance (original) – the densest and most "grown-up": pink pepper, jasmine, iris and patchouli. For all year round and the evening.
  • Eau Fraîche – the freshest and greenest: citron, cedar and teak wood. For summer, the office and sport.
  • Eau Tendre – the gentlest and most romantic: quince, grapefruit, rose and white musk. The most versatile gift.
  • Eau Vive – the most energetic and citrusy: blood orange and grapefruit. For sunny days and optimists.
  • The Eau de Parfum (EDP) in each line is rounder and longer-lasting, while the Eau de Toilette (EDT) is airier and more sparkling.

The idea behind Chance

The first Chance came out in 2002 and was created by Jacques Polge, Chanel's long-standing perfumer. The idea was bold for the house of No. 5: a fragrance without a strict structure that "spins" like its round bottle and reveals different facets at different moments. Instead of the classic pyramid of top, heart and base notes, Chance is built as a continuous rotation around a single heart.

The success was so great that Chanel turned Chance into a whole family. After Eau Fraîche (2007) and Eau Tendre (2010) came Eau Vive (2015), by then the work of his son Olivier Polge. You will find all the versions of Chanel Chance perfume we offer in the collection Chanel Chance.

In 2024 the family grew with a fifth member – Eau Splendide. In this article we focus on the four classic versions.

Chance – the original

The classic Chanel Chance EDP is the richest and most expressive of the four. It opens with spicy pink pepper, has jasmine and powdery iris at its heart, and the base combines patchouli, musk and vanilla. The result is a modern chypre – fresh and sweet at the same time, with a light earthy depth.

This is the Chance for women who want presence: at the office it looks elegant, in the evening sensual. It can be worn all year round but blossoms especially beautifully in the cool months. The longevity of the Eau de Parfum is very good and the strongest in the family. If you are looking for one single Chance to serve you from morning to evening, this is it.

Chance Eau Fraîche – green freshness

Eau Fraîche is the "cleanest" and least sweet member of the family. In the Eau de Toilette citron and lemon meet water hyacinth and jasmine, and the base is cedar, teak wood, white musk and patchouli. The fragrance is greenish-citrusy, slightly woody and very fresh – like a white shirt on a hot day.

EDT or EDP?

Chance Eau Fraîche EDT is more sparkling and transparent – ideal for heat, the gym and an air-conditioned office. Eau Fraîche EDP, created by Olivier Polge, adds aldehydes and more amber warmth: it sounds smoother, "soapier" in a good way and lasts longer. If you love the freshness but the Eau de Toilette vanishes quickly on you, the Eau de Parfum is the logical choice.

Chance Eau Tendre – pink tenderness

The pink Eau Tendre is one of the best-loved members of the family – and the easiest to give as a gift. The Eau de Toilette combines quince and grapefruit with delicate hyacinth and jasmine, and the base of white musk, iris, cedar and amber makes it soft as cashmere. The fragrance is fruity-floral but not sugary; cosy but not boring.

EDT or EDP?

Chance Eau Tendre EDT is fruitier and airier, with more grapefruit and transparency. Chance Eau Tendre EDP places rose at the centre – the result is a more floral, velvety and feminine version with better longevity. If you are a romantic who loves roses, choose the EDP; if you prefer lightness and freshness – the EDT.

Eau Tendre is a wonderful "first Chanel" – for a school-leaver, a student or a woman who has so far worn only light fragrances. If you do not know the taste of the person you are buying for, it is the safest card in the deck.

Chance Eau Vive – orange energy

Eau Vive (2015) is the youngest of the four classic Chance fragrances and the most citrusy. Blood orange and grapefruit explode in the very first second, jasmine adds light, and cedar, white musk, iris and vetiver keep the composition clean and modern. It smells of freshly squeezed juice and sunlight through the window.

This is the Chance for women with a fast pace who love dynamism and do not want their perfume to weigh on them. It sounds best in spring and summer, when travelling or in everyday life.

Which Chanel Chance is best for you

To the question "Chanel Chance – which is better", the right answer is: it depends on you. Here is how to choose by age, style and season:

  • Under 25, a first luxury perfume – Eau Tendre EDT or Eau Vive. Light, friendly and easy to wear.
  • 25–40, office and an active life – Eau Fraîche (EDT for summer, EDP for all year) or Eau Tendre EDP.
  • Over 35 or women with an established style – the original Chance EDP: the most complex and with the greatest presence.
  • Only for summer – Eau Fraîche EDT or Eau Vive.
  • Only for winter and the evening – Chance EDP.
  • A "blind" gift – Eau Tendre.

Of course, age is only a guide – many women over 50 adore Eau Vive, and 20-year-olds wear the original Chance with confidence. The best rule is to choose the colour whose mood is closest to you. You will find more of the brand's classics in the collection Chanel women's perfumes.
