Bulgarian rose perfumes – Rosa damascena in world perfumery

Every May, before the sun has risen over Kazanlak, thousands of hands hurry to pick the rose blossoms before the heat evaporates the most precious part of them. From these flowers comes one of the most expensive perfumery oils in the world – Bulgarian rose oil. In this guide you will learn why the world's perfume houses seek out Rosa damascena from the Rose Valley in particular, how to recognise it in a fragrance and which Bulgarian rose perfumes – for women, men and unisex – you can find at Parfyum.bg.

In short
  • Bulgarian rose is Rosa damascena, grown mainly in the valley between the Balkan Mountains and the Sredna Gora range.
  • One kilogram of rose oil requires around three to four tonnes of rose blossoms – hence its price and prestige.
  • In perfumes it sounds honeyed, slightly lemony and spicy, with a winey nuance – fresher and more "alive" than sweetish synthetic roses.
  • Bulgarian rose features both in women's classics such as Allure Sensuelle and My Burberry and in powerful unisex fragrances such as Oud Satin Mood and Alexandria II.

The Rose Valley: why Bulgarian rose is a legend

The oil-bearing rose arrived in these lands centuries ago, and around Kazanlak, Karlovo and Strelcha it found almost ideal conditions: a valley sheltered from cold winds, humid spring nights, sandy soils and moderate temperatures during flowering. It is these conditions that give Rosa damascena its rich and balanced composition of aroma molecules – citronellol, geraniol, phenylethyl alcohol and small but extremely powerful amounts of damascenones, which are responsible for the honey-fruity, almost winey character.

The harvest lasts only a few weeks between May and June. The blossoms are picked by hand early in the morning, because as the temperature rises part of the essential oil is simply lost. That is why the ratio is so dramatic: three to four tonnes of blossoms yield only about a kilogram of oil. It is no coincidence that "Bulgarian rose oil" is protected as a geographical indication in the European Union, and the Rose Festival in Kazanlak attracts visitors from all over the world.

For perfumers, Bulgarian rose is a benchmark. When a fragrance description says "Bulgarian rose", it usually means a high-purity ingredient that gives the composition a natural depth that synthetic roses can hardly achieve on their own.

Rose oil, absolute and rose in the pyramid

"Rose" in a list of notes can mean very different things. Here are the main forms perfumers work with:

Raw material How it is obtained Character in the fragrance
Rose oil (rose otto) Steam distillation of fresh blossoms Fresh, lemony-honeyed, slightly spicy, "luminous"
Rose absolute Solvent extraction (via concrete) Denser, sweeter, waxy, close to the scent of a living flower
Rose water A by-product of distillation Transparent, watery-green, delicate
Synthetic rose molecules Laboratory synthesis Stable and clean, but flatter without a natural base

Most modern perfumes combine several of them. Bulgarian rose often sits next to Turkish rose (also damascena, from the Isparta region), Rose de Mai (centifolia) from Grasse or Taif rose from Saudi Arabia. Each has its own accent: centifolia is more powdery and honeyed, Taif drier and spicier, while Bulgarian rose stands out for its freshness and juiciness.

The note "Bulgarian rose" in a pyramid is information from the brand, not a laboratory certificate of the percentage of oil. So judge the fragrance by how it sounds on your skin, not just by the label.

How to recognise Rosa damascena in a perfume

You do not need to be a perfumer to notice the difference. Pay attention to the following signs when you test a perfume with rose oil:

  • A citrus-green opening. In the first minutes real rose often sounds almost lemony, with a light freshness of a crushed leaf.
  • Honey and wine in the heart. After about half an hour the honey-fruity, slightly winey character emerges, for which the damascenones are responsible.
  • A hint of clove. The eugenol in rose oil adds a barely perceptible spiciness that makes the rose more "grown-up" and serious.
  • Natural development. The rose changes over the hours instead of staying equally sweet from start to finish.

The best way to train your nose is to compare two or three fragrances at the same time: for example the fresh rose in Dolce Peony, the classic chypre rose in Allure Sensuelle and the dark, resinous rose in Oud Satin Mood.

Women's perfumes with Bulgarian rose

Chanel Allure Sensuelle

Created by Jacques Polge in 2005, Allure Sensuelle is the warmer, more sensual sister of Allure. At its heart are Turkish and Bulgarian rose, wrapped in iris, patchouli and a soft oriental base. It suits women who want an elegant, mature rose for evenings and cooler days. See it on the Chanel Allure Sensuelle page.

Burberry My Burberry

The work of Francis Kurkdjian (2014), inspired by a London garden after rain and the iconic trench coat. Sweet pea, geranium and golden quince lead to a heart of centifolia rose and Bulgarian damask rose over patchouli. The result is a modern, gentle and very wearable rose for the office and everyday life.

Guerlain Rose Amira and Xerjoff Damarose

If you are looking for rose as the main character, these two fragrances are for you. Guerlain Rose Amira combines Grasse rose absolute and Bulgarian rose with incense, raspberry and leathery notes – rich and oriental. Xerjoff Damarose, on the other hand, is a luxurious bouquet of Bulgarian and damask rose with iris and lily of the valley – luminous, but with a rich, long development.

Dolce Peony and Acqua di Gioia Intense

For a more youthful, lighter sound, Dolce&Gabbana Dolce Peony combines pear, peony and Bulgarian rose in a transparent spring accord, while Acqua di Gioia Intense adds damask rose and jasmine to a fruity, sunny freshness. Both are excellent if rose seems "heavy" to you – here it is only a soft background.

You will find more roses for her in the category women's perfumes, and on a tighter budget look at the originals unboxed – the same contents at a lower price.

Men's and unisex perfumes with Bulgarian rose

A men's perfume with Bulgarian rose is far from exotic. In the Middle East rose has long been a masculine note, and modern niche perfumery combines it with oud, leather, spices and woods, so that it loses any "sweetness" and sounds commanding.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud Satin Mood

Launched in 2015, Oud Satin Mood is like rose velvet: damask and Turkish rose, violet and oud, wrapped in vanilla and benzoin. Dense, sweet-resinous and with exceptional longevity – one or two sprays are quite enough.

Xerjoff Alexandria II and Alexandria III

Alexandria II is one of Xerjoff's most recognisable creations: apple, cinnamon and lavender at the start, then rosewood, cedar, lily of the valley and Bulgarian rose over amber and oud. It sounds regal and suits men who are not afraid of attention. Alexandria III develops the same theme with an accent on cinnamon, lavender and musk. You will find both in the collection Xerjoff Alexandria.

Tiziana Terenzi Kirke and Lorenzo Pazzaglia Passion Rose

Kirke is a juicy fruity unisex fragrance – passion fruit, peach, raspberry and blackcurrant over lily of the valley, Bulgarian rose and musk, with famous longevity and sillage. Lorenzo Pazzaglia's Passion Rose is an extrait in which Bulgarian rose meets passion fruit, saffron and oud – a darker, spicier reading.

Frédéric Malle Rose & Cuir

Jean-Claude Ellena created Rose & Cuir in 2019 as a minimalist dialogue between rose, geranium, blackcurrant, Sichuan pepper and leather. Dry, elegant and completely genderless – an ideal choice if you are trying rose for the first time as a man.

Expert tip: If you are unsure whether rose suits you, start with a fragrance in which it is combined with woods or leather. These partners "dry out" the rose and make it more neutral, and then you can easily move on to more floral compositions.

How to wear a rose perfume through the year

Rose is a year-round note, but its different interpretations have their seasons:

  1. Spring: transparent roses with peony, pear or green notes – Dolce Peony, My Burberry.
  2. Summer: only light fruity roses and moderate application; dense roses with oud become suffocating in the heat.
  3. Autumn: roses with patchouli, iris and spices – Allure Sensuelle, Rose & Cuir.
  4. Winter: dark, resinous roses with oud, incense and vanilla – Oud Satin Mood, Alexandria II, Rose Amira.

Layering also works well: rose over sandalwood or vanilla becomes warmer, and over citrus fresher. Apply to pulse points and do not rub your wrists, so as not to "crush" the top notes. You will find our full selection in the category rose perfumes, and the bolder compositions among niche perfumes.

Bulgarian rose is listed in the pyramid of Chanel Allure Sensuelle, Burberry My Burberry, Dolce&Gabbana Dolce Peony, Xerjoff Alexandria II and Damarose, Tiziana Terenzi Kirke, Guerlain Rose Amira and Lorenzo Pazzaglia Passion Rose, as well as many other niche fragrances.

Is there a men's perfume with Bulgarian rose?

Yes. The best suited to men are unisex compositions in which rose is combined with oud, leather or woods – Xerjoff Alexandria II, Oud Satin Mood, Rose & Cuir and Passion Rose.

What is the difference between Rosa damascena and Rosa centifolia?

Both are classic perfumery roses. Damascena (Bulgarian, Turkish) sounds fresher, honeyed and spicy with a winey tint, while centifolia from Grasse is more powdery, soft and honeyed.

Are rose perfumes long-lasting?

It depends on the composition. Light floral roses last a few hours, while roses with oud, patchouli and amber, such as Oud Satin Mood or Alexandria II, can be smelt all day and even the next morning on clothes.
