Arabic perfumes and the famous fragrances they resemble

Arabic perfumes and the famous fragrances they resemble

"What does Khamrah smell like?", "Which perfume does Yara resemble?", "Afnan 9PM – a copy of which fragrance?" – these are some of the most searched questions about Arabic perfumery. The answer is rarely just "a copy of X". In this article we honestly compare the most popular Arabic fragrances with the famous designer and niche perfumes they are linked to: what really resembles what, where they diverge and why legitimate Arabic brands are not counterfeits.

In short
  • Lattafa, Armaf, Afnan and Al Haramain are independent companies with registered trademarks, their own bottles and names – they make fragrances "in the spirit of", not fake copies.
  • The closest pairs: Khamrah ↔ Kilian Angels’ Share, Ana Abiyedh Rouge ↔ Baccarat Rouge 540, Club de Nuit Intense ↔ Creed Aventus, Amber Oud Gold Edition ↔ Xerjoff Erba Pura.
  • The resemblance is strongest in the first hour; in the heart and base the raw materials and balance usually differ.
  • Some Arabic fragrances – for example Lattafa Yara – have no single exact "original" and are loved precisely for their own style.

Alternative, inspiration or counterfeit?

Before we get to the specific pairs, let us clarify the terms, because online they are constantly mixed up.

  • Counterfeit – a product that imitates another brand's bottle, box and name and is sold as the original. This is illegal and often contains dubious ingredients.
  • Alternative / "inspired by" – an independent fragrance with its own name, bottle and manufacturer, whose olfactory idea is close to a famous perfume. Fragrance formulas cannot be patented, so this approach is legal and widespread – including among the designer brands themselves, which follow the same trends.
  • Original Arabic perfume – a product of companies such as Lattafa, Armaf (part of the Sterling Parfums group), Afnan or Al Haramain, made in the UAE, with factory packaging and a batch number.

Everything we offer in the category Arabic perfumesis the original production of these brands. When we say "it resembles Angels’ Share", we mean a similarity in feel, not identity.

Lattafa alternatives: which perfumes they resemble

Lattafa is perhaps the most discussed Arabic brand on social media. Here are the four fragrances you ask about most often and what they are compared with.

Lattafa Khamrah – the warm shadow of Angels’ Share

Khamrah opens with cinnamon and nutmeg, after which dates, praline and a soft vanilla-tonka background appear. The feel of "spiced cognac and pastry" links it to Kilian Angels’ Share – a 2020 fragrance created by Benoist Lapouza in which cognac, cinnamon, tonka and praline play the leading role. The difference: in the Kilian the boozy cognac effect is clearer and cleaner, while Khamrah is denser, more "date-like" and sweeter in the base.

Lattafa Ana Abiyedh Rouge – the airy effect of Baccarat Rouge 540

The comparison with MFK Baccarat Rouge 540 is the most common one you will come across. The crystalline saffron-amber effect and the sweetish "sugary" radiance are indeed recognisable. In Francis Kurkdjian's original, however, the airy, mineral amber structure is more transparent and refined, while Ana Abiyedh Rouge is sweeter and denser in the heart.

Lattafa Asad – spicy energy in the style of Sauvage Elixir

Asad combines black pepper, tobacco, pineapple and vanilla in a spicy-amber fragrance that many associate with Dior Sauvage Elixir. There is a similarity in direction – a dark, spiced, oriental-woody masculinity – but the formulas are different: in Elixir lavender, liquorice and sandalwood dominate, while Asad is sweeter and more vanilla-rich. Read a detailed analysis in our separate Asad review.

Lattafa Yara – no direct "original"

Yara is proof that an Arabic brand can have a hit of its own. Orchid, heliotrope, mandarin and creamy vanilla with musk create a pink, powdery gourmand fragrance that is compared with various pop gourmand perfumes but has no single exact prototype. So to the question "Lattafa Yara – an alternative to which perfume?" the honest answer is: to none in particular.

You will find more fragrances from the brand in the collection Lattafa perfumes.

Armaf and Al Haramain: the heirs of Aventus and Erba Pura

Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Man is the emblem of the whole phenomenon. Ever since its launch in 2015 it has been compared with Creed Aventus because of its combination of lemon, pineapple, blackcurrant and smoky birch. An important clarification: CDNI is sharper and smokier in the opening, while the fruity juiciness of Aventus is softer and rounder. Some people like CDNI precisely for this rawer character. The brand's whole range is in the collection Armaf perfumes.

Al Haramain L’Aventure is the other frequently mentioned "Aventus" interpretation – more citrusy, brighter and with more delicate smoke. A good choice if CDNI seems too aggressive to you.

Al Haramain Amber Oud Gold Edition is popular for its similarity to Xerjoff Erba Pura: juicy fruits, white musk, amber and vanilla in a very loud, sweet cloud. Erba Pura has brighter citrus nuances and a smoother dry-down, but the atmosphere is recognisable.

Armaf Odyssey is a whole series with many versions – from gourmand to citrus. Here the comparisons vary according to the specific variant, so we recommend it rather as a line in its own right than as an "alternative" to a particular perfume.

Afnan alternatives: 9PM, Supremacy Silver and 9 AM Dive

Afnan is a brand that plays in several registers. Afnan 9PM is its best-known fragrance, and the question "which fragrance is 9PM a copy of" has a clear answer: the sweet apple-cinnamon vanilla with lavender brings it close to Jean Paul Gaultier Ultra Male. It differs with a denser, more "nocturnal" vanilla trail.

Afnan Supremacy Silver often appears on lists of Aventus alternatives – a fruity-woody profile with a smoky accent, but softer and sweeter than CDNI. Afnan 9 AM Dive is the fresh sister of 9PM: a citrus-aquatic summer fragrance compared with modern luxury "aqua" perfumes. All the brand's versions are gathered in the collection Afnan perfumes.

Comparison table of alternative perfumes

Arabic fragrance Resembles Similarity Main difference
Lattafa Khamrah Kilian Angels’ Share High Sweeter, with dates, less "cognac"
Lattafa Ana Abiyedh Rouge MFK Baccarat Rouge 540 Medium to high Denser and more sugary
Lattafa Asad Dior Sauvage Elixir Medium More vanilla, without the lavender backbone
Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Creed Aventus High in the opening Sharper, smokier start
Al Haramain Amber Oud Gold Edition Xerjoff Erba Pura High Denser, less citrus
Afnan 9PM JPG Ultra Male Medium to high Darker, denser vanilla
Lattafa Yara – Its own style No direct prototype
The similarity ratings are approximate and reflect the overall impression of the fragrance. Skin, climate and batch affect how close the two perfumes will sound on you.

How they differ from the originals

The low price does not come from nowhere. Here is what usually distinguishes the Arabic option from its designer or niche reference:

  1. Raw materials. Expensive natural essences and patented molecules are often replaced with more affordable synthetic materials. The result is a more linear development.
  2. Balance. Arabic formulas love sweetness and density. That is why almost every "alternative" sounds a little sweeter and thicker than the original.
  3. Longevity. Here Arabic brands often win – many are concentrated and last a long time, especially on clothes.
  4. Consistency. With some fragrances (CDNI is a well-known example) different batches may sound slightly different.
  5. Prestige and history. A Kilian or Creed bottle is part of the experience and of the value as a gift.

How to choose wisely

If you have worn neither the original nor the alternative, start with the Arabic option. If you fall in love with the direction, you will know whether it is worth investing in the niche perfume – and many people keep both and wear them for different occasions.
  • You are looking for a prestigious gift – choose the original.
  • You are looking for an everyday fragranceto spray generously – the Arabic alternative is a sensible choice.
  • You like sweet, dense compositions – the Arabic school was made for you.
  • You prefer transparency and nuance – the originals usually offer them better.

Frequently asked questions

Are Lattafa perfumes copies of famous fragrances?

Not in the sense of counterfeits. Lattafa is a registered brand from the UAE that creates fragrances with their own names and bottles. Some are inspired by popular perfumes (Khamrah, Ana Abiyedh Rouge), others are completely original ideas such as Yara.

Lattafa Yara – an alternative to which perfume?

Yara has no single exact prototype. It is a creamy, pink, powdery gourmand fragrance with orchid, heliotrope, mandarin, vanilla and musk, loved precisely for its own character.

Afnan 9PM – a copy of which fragrance?

It is most often compared with Jean Paul Gaultier Ultra Male because of the apple, cinnamon, lavender and vanilla. Afnan sounds a little darker and denser in the vanilla.

Are alternative perfumes legal?

Yes, when they are sold under their own brand and do not imitate the original's bottle and name. Fragrance formulas cannot be patented, so "inspired by" fragrances are a legal, mass-market segment.
